The Honolulu Medical Examiner has identified the elderly couple involved in a murder-suicide Sunday morning in Hawaii Kai.

Police say an 81-year-old Leighton Yasuhara shot and killed his 79-year-old wife, Julia, before turning the gun on himself.

Leighton was a retired HPD major, who left the service in 1984.

The incident happened Sunday morning at the couple's home on Anakua Street in Hawaii Kai, near Koko Head.

According to police, the couple's son went to check on his parents just before 11 a.m after Leighton "unexpectedly" cancelled an appointment. That's when he heard three gunshots and attempted to enter the bedroom from where he heard the sots. After being unable to enter the room, he called police who discovered the couple's bodies. EMS pronounced the couple dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for the police department says the woman suffered from a long-term illness.
