The 61-year-old Fourth of July Kailua fireworks show has been saved by an outpouring of community donations.
Kailua resident Brook Gramann, who led the fundraising effort, said contributions from $1 to $15,000 helped keep the fireworks show alive despite the weak economy.
In all, $53,000 was raised this year, well above the $42,000 needed for a 12- to 14-minute display. The extra money will be used to pay for expenses such as special-duty police and extending the show a few minutes longer.
The Kailua fireworks show has faced the threat of cancellation in many recent years because of financial difficulties.
It is one of several public fireworks displays on Oahu on Friday and Saturday.
