The National Weather Service has issued a red flag fire warning for leeward sections of all Hawaii counties, expected to last until Sunday night.
A red flag warning indicates that "critical fire weather conditions" exist. Those conditions include: strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures.
The NWS reports that strong high pressure and dry air mass building to the north of the state are causing the gusty tradewinds and relatively low humidity.
So far Sunday morning saw a small brushfire near Oahu's northeast shore. Cpt. Rick Karasaki of the Honolulu Fire Department said the fire is burning roughly an acre's worth of pine needles on the Laie Trail near the ridgeline.
An aerial unit is being used to drop in firefighters into the slow-moving fire before it begins water drops on the fire.
