Christmas Eve turned deadly for one Maui teenager after he was killed trying to cross Mokulele Highway Saturday afternoon.

Maui police say 17-year-old Zachariah Aubut was walking along the east side of Mokulele Highway just north of Kealia National Wildlife Reserve Road when he attempted to cross the road.

That's when he was struck by a maroon Saturn sedan heading northbound on the highway aaround 12:53 p.m.

Aubut was pronounced at Maui Memorial hospital just under an hour and half after the crash.

The driver of the sedan, a 21-year-old woman, received cuts to her left arm and leg but was treated and released at the scene. The driver's 2-year-old daughter was also in the car during the collision, but she was not injured as she was restrained in a children's car seat.

Aubut is the 20th traffic fatality this year compared with 11 this time last year.
