This display at Brookstone inside The Gardens Mall reminds shoppers to "be prepared."

Let's face it, many of us can't survive without our gadgets.  But what happens if the batteries give out during a tropical storm-produced power outage?

The technology companies have thought of that.  With the height of tropical storm season here in South Florida, stores are loaded with ways to make life a little easier should the power go out.

Brookstone at The Gardens Mall has an entire display at the front of the store named "Be Prepared."  On it, shoppers can find a hand-cranked weather radio that also doubles as a flashlight.  The device also can charge just about any cellphone.

Along with hand-cranked flashlights, the store is stocked with battery-powered portable fans.

Brookstone also sells an Eton Rukus portable solar system that uses solar power to charge devices such as cellphones and computer tablets through a USB output.
