High surf advisory through Tuesday afternoon

HONOLULU -

The National Weather Service says a high surf advisory for the north and west facing shores of Kauai, Oahu, and Molokai, as well as the north facing shores of Maui and the north and east shores of the Big Island, is in effect until 6 p.m. Tuesday.

A long-period north-northwest swell arrived overnight, according to forecast.  It is somewhat larger than expected.

The elevated surf will take longer to subside below advisory criteria.

Surf is 18-to-24-feet-high along the north and west facing shores of Kauai, and along with the north shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui.

The surf on the west facing shores of Oahu and Molokai is 12-to-18-feet-high.  Surf along the north and east facing shores of the Big Island is is 8-to-12-feet-high.

Everyone at the beach and along shore should heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and exercise caution.
