HONOLULU -

Due to weather conditions and rising water levels in the Hanapepe, Makaweli and Waimea rivers, the Department of Education will close all schools on Kauai from 'Ele'ele west as of 11 a.m. Friday, in addition to Hanalei Elementary, according to Kauai Civil Defense.

The latest closures include 'Ele'ele Elementary School, Waimea Canyon Middle School, Waimea High School and Kekaha Elementary School.

Students will be transported via bus to their designated bus stops.

Also, due to rising levels in the Hanapepe River earlier Friday, the one-lane bridge on Hanapepe Road has been closed so that flood barriers can be erected.  Motorists are advised to use an alternate route to Hanapepe Town.

Ponding has been reported on Kaumuali'i Highway between mile markers 21 and 22 in Pakala, and in the vicinity of Davidson's Beach, between mile markers 25 and 26 in Kekaha.  Kekaha Road is also experiencing ponding between Kala Road and Io Road.

All roads remain open, however, signs have been posted in those areas and motorists are asked to drive with caution.

Kauai Civil Defense reported earlier that Puolo Road has been closed in Hanapepe.

The county has closed green waste disposal operations at all transfer stations except the Lihue Transfer Station. Green waste is also being accepted at the Kekaha Landfill.

More information will be provided as conditions develop. For immediate updates, monitor the National Weather Service website at http://www.prh.noaa.gov/hnl/, call (808) 245-6001, or tune to your local media. For road closure information, call (808) 241-1725.
