June is CPR awareness month. The American Heart Association said only 30 percent of Americans are trained in CPR.
Training and certification is available from the American Heart Association, American Red Cross and several other organizations.
About 100 chest compressions per minute is the target rate.
Many trainers use the Bee Gees song "Stayin' Alive" to positively demonstrate 100 beats per minute. But we found other uplifting heart songs that will also work:
Gloria Gaynor's disco smash "I Will Survive" works well
Soul II Soul's "Back To Life" also fits the "positive" category.
..As does "Strong Heart" by Patty Loveless
Motley Crue's "Kickstart My Heart" is a pretty literal one to have in your head....There are some other non-heart songs that work, too:
"Hard to Handle" by The Black Crowes
You can also use "Cecilia" by Simon & Garfunkel
"Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynrd Skynrd is about 100 beats per minute
Like the Hanson boys? "Mmmbop" would be a good choice.
So is "Rock Your Body" by Justin Timberlake
Cyndi Lauper's anthem "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" could be another option
The All American Rejects' song "Gives You Hell" also works
"Shake Your Bon Bon" by Ricky Martin
"Thank God I'm a Country Boy" by John Denver is also around 100bpm....We also found a few songs that are fast enough, but may not carry the best CPR message:
"Heartbreaker" by Mariah Carey is fast enough, but may not be positive enough.
"Quit Playing Games With My Heart" by the Backstreet Boys may not be the best choice to sing out loud.
Coincidentally, "Heart Attack Man" by the Beastie Boys is fast enough to perform CPR to.
But we would not recommend singing "Spirit In The Sky" by Norman Greenbaum during chest compressions, even though it's fast enough to use.
And while the tempo is right, we would not recommend singing the chorus to "Another One Bites The Dust" during your emergency.
