WAILUKU, Hawaii -

Developers have secured financing to build what would be the first new hospital on Maui in six decades and the first in new hospital in the entire state since the mid-1990s.

Newport Hospital Corp. President Brian Hoyle tells The Maui News an unidentified global real estate investment trust has committed to finance the project.

Newport plans to build the facility in Kaanapali. Hoyle said the property is zoned for agriculture and will need to be rezoned. Construction could begin in 2015.

The hospital will have a 24-hour emergency room, operating room and other facilities.

No new hospitals have been built on Maui since Maui Memorial was built in 1952. North Hawaii Community Hospital on the Big Island is the last new hospital to be built in the state.
