It will soon cost more to ships goods to and from Hawaii.

Matson Navigation Co. said Monday it plans to raise rates by an average of 5.5 percent for Hawaii service.

Effective Jan. 5, rates for Hawaii service will increase by $175 per westbound container and $85 per eastbound container. The company will also raise its terminal handling charge by $50 per westbound container and $25 per eastbound container.

Senior Vice President Dave Hoppes says the increase will help offset operating costs and support service investments.

Effective Jan. 26, Matson will raise rates for Guam, Northern Marianas and Micronesia services by $275 and raise its West Coast handling charge by $75.

Matson has said a molasses spill in Honolulu in September was partly to blame for lower third quarter profits.
