Gainesville Mayor Craig Lowe was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after state troopers say he was found asleep behind the wheel of his car after a crash.


The mayor of Gainesville has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after he was involved in a crash.

Mayor Craig Lowe was arrested on a charge of DUI causing property damage Thursday morning, Alachua County Jail records show.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers were called to a crash involving Lowe's car. When troopers arrived, they found Lowe asleep behind the wheel, WJXT-TV in Jacksonville reports.

Lowe reportedly told troopers he fell asleep while driving.

Tuesday, the 55-year-old won a place in the April 16 runoff in a bid for re-election.
