Tuesday marks exactly one year since the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

The 17-year-old was shot and killed by former neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman in the central Florida town of Sanford.

Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, claiming that he shot Martin in self-defense.

Zimmerman's trial begins in June.

Meanwhile, Martin's family is marking the anniversary with a candlelight vigil in New York City.

Martin's parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, are scheduled to take part in an event Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. in Union Square Park, along with their attorneys and others. A moment of silence is scheduled for 7:17 p.m.
