A Canadian man who drank eight beers and wanted to prove he could swim to Detroit is apologizing after causing an international incident.

John Morillo, 47, told the Windsor Star he could be fined up to $25,000 for the stunt Monday night.

He'd been telling his friends for years that he could swim from Windsor, Ontario, to Detroit and back via the Detroit River, but they never believed him.

He made it across one way, but was picked up on the way back.

A neighbor had called authorities after losing sight of Morillo, and the U.S. and Canadian coast guards were deployed in a search and rescue.

Morillo was cited for being intoxicated in a public place and was released from jail on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press.

In retrospect, he admits the whole thing was "really stupid."
