Crash into pond at Water Works Park
DES MOINES, Iowa -

Rescue crews and police were called to Water Works Park in Des Moines Thursday on a report of a vehicle in a pond.

Crews were sent to a pond inside the park west of the Water Works offices about 12:45 p.m.

Witnesses reported a vehicle in the water with people on top.

Crews found a white minivan submerged in the water up to its windows. No serious injuries were reported.

Police said the driver was getting a driving lesson and apparently hit the gas instead of the brake.

The person giving the lesson tried to grab the wheel, but the minivan ended up going into the pond.  After the crash, the two adults tried to stand on the top of the vehicle as it submerged and cracked the windshield as they tried to stand on it.

Photos from the scene show people fishing on the shore of the pond just yards from where the vehicle landed in the water.

The crash remains under investigation.
