A 53-year-old woman is dead after a motor vehicle collision in Keaau on the Big Island. The incident occurred on Route 130 on Saturday night.
According to Big Island Police, the woman crossed the median in her 2001 Mercury sedan and struck a 1999 Mercedes Benz. The 56-year-old driver of the Mercedes Benz and her daughter were sent to the Hilo Medical Center.
Police say that all occupants were wearing seat belts. Speed is thought to be a factor in the crash.
The name of the 53-year-old woman is being withheld pending notification of the family.
This is the first traffic fatality of the year on the Big Island.
