HONOLULU -

A water main breaks right before afternoon rush hour jamming up traffic off Dillingham Boulevard. Roads around the water main were closed Monday and officials with the Board of Water Supply say you can expect it to stay that way overnight.

The sidewalk and road caved in creating a huge hole at the intersection of Dillingham Boulevard and Kohou Street in Kalihi.

The 12-inch water main broke flooding the streets and creating chaos.

"(It) looked like it all flooded everywhere and looked like probably had an earthquake," said Daily Zhang with Excellent Motor Group, Inc.

Zhang's store is right on the corner of where the main broke. He said the water was at least four inches high and overflowed onto the sidewalk close to his parking lot. His customers were forced to wait for the mess to clear.

"They had to wait almost two hours to come here and they were sitting inside the car," said Zhang.

Right at the afternoon traffic rush part of Dillingham Boulevard was closed off as well as part of Kohou Street. A worker at the Department of Motor Vehicles off of Dillingham Boulevard said Monday was one of the main days for vehicle registrations. The road closures created a traffic nightmare.

"It was really busy until the end of the day. We closed at 4 p.m. A lot of (customers) were complaining because of the traffic," said Vena Naihe.

Officials ask motorists to use alternate routes during Tuesday's morning commute.
