15 local robotics geniuses will be traveling to the mainland for the 2014 International Marine Advanced Technology Education Challenge.
The Science Club from Highlands Intermediate School and Pearl City High School in Pearl City advanced after placing first and second in the Big Island Regional ROV (remotely operated vehicle) Competition in Hilo.
The team designed and constructed a ROV that included motors for maneuvering, cameras for viewing the surrounding areas and other attachements like claws and sensors.
The team will travel to the international competition at the end of this month to Michigan.
The competition is being held in Michigan because of the state’s connection to the competition’s theme of shipwrecks. The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve is located in Alpena, Michigan, which is the home to over 50 shipwrecks.
