WAILUKU, Hawaii -

An 18-year veteran of the Maui County Police Department was arrested and charged Wednesday for abuse of a family and household member, according to police.

The incident happened on Tuesday at around 9:40 p.m.  The mother of the victim reported that her 13-year-old daughter was slapped by her father during a verbal argument.  The impact caused the victim to fall backward and she hit her head on a wall-mounted air conditioning unit.

The girl was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment.  Doctors say she sustained a concussion.  The girl was later released from the hospital in good condition.

The victim's father was identified as 46-year-old Nelson Johnson.  Officer Johnson was also placed under arrest for assault in the second degree, but he was released on this charge pending further investigation.

Johnson posted $1,000 bail for the abuse of a family member charge.
