Maui County police say two visitors died Tuesday after swimming in waters off West Maui.
Officers responded to the Kaleialoha Condominiums at around 1:15 p.m. for a report of a male swimmer in distress. They saw the man being assisted on the rocky shoreline fronting the condo. The man was unconscious, but breathing on his own.
The man was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at around 2:47 p.m.
Police say the man was snorkeling and was found floating face down in the water near the shoreline. The man was identified as 81-year-old Joseph Klein from Alberta, Canada. The cause of death is pending autopsy results.
Nearly 10 miles away at around 4:15 p.m., officers responded to Launiupoko Beach Park for a call of a unresponsive male on the beach.
When officers arrived on the scene, bystanders were conducting CPR on the man. Although fire crews and paramedics tried to revive the man, he died at the scene.
Police found out that the man was swimming in the ocean about 25 feet from the shoreline on the south side of the park. The man went underwater, but did not resurface.
The man was identified as Lloyd H. Kahlandt of Tekamah, Neb. Cause of death is pending autopsy results.
