Honolulu police closed roads near McCully Street and Kapiolani Boulevard late Thursday afternoon as water gushed out of the sidewalk.
The Board of Water Supply says the water main break happened at around 5:15 p.m.
Traffic at this usually busy intersection came to a screeching halt during rush-hour traffic.
As the sun went down, the water kept gushing.
As of 8:24 p.m., crews were on the scene working to shut down water to begin repairs to the main.

The water was turned off at 8:30 p.m.
Two customers were without power while crews made repairs to the broken 16-inch water main.
