Honolulu police say a man in his late 70s is dead after the sports-utility vehicle he was driving crashed on the Pali Highway in Nuuanu Wednesday.
The crash closed the Pali Highway at Puiwa Street heading Kailua bound at around 11 a.m.
The closure was then expanded to Wylie Street and the Honolulu-bound lanes at Castle Junction to close both sides of the Pali Highway at around 11:30 a.m.
A woman in her late 60s who was a passenger in the SUV was hospitalized in serious condition. Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
Witnesses say the SUV was going at around 80 mph on the Pali Highway heading towards town when the vehicle hit an embankment, did a barrel roll in the air about 60 yards, landed on all four tires and skidded into oncoming traffic.
One witness said the SUV flew over their own vehicle without hitting them. An autopsy will be done to see if the male driver had a medical condition. Police also say the vehicle will be examined for possible mechanical failure.
