After surgical treatment and rehabilitation at the Three Ring Ranch Exotic Animal Sanctuary, a Hawaiian hawk, or i'o, was released on May 27, 2013.
The bird made a complete recovery. After time in a large outdoor flight cage, it was determined it was ready for release.
The hawk was released on the grounds of the sanctuary where it immediately perched on a nearby tree.
The i'o is protected by state and federal laws.
Federal wildlife officials are investigating the pellet gun shooting of this hawk and another hawk that was treated and released.
