PAHALA, Hawaii -

Big Island police say Highway 11 was reopened at around 4 p.m. at the 54-mile marker near Pahala Wednesday after a deadly vehicle crash.

Police say three men and one woman died at the scene.  A boy was found in the back seat of the white Nissan Altima unrestrained and unresponsive.  The child was transported to Kona Community Hospital where he later died.

Police say two men and a child were in the Nissan and a man and a woman were in the Ford F-350.

Fire crews were called at 10:17 a.m. Wednesday to Highway 11 near the Punaluu Stream bridge.

Investigators say that the Nissan was traveling south at the bridge when it swerved to the left, crossed the center line and crashed head-on into the Ford truck.  The truck overturned and caught fire.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

This was the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year compared with none at this same time last year.
