AUDIT: City lost $366,000 for lackluster camping permit system
The city has completed its audit of how the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation handles camping fees.
The audit was ordered to determine if the money would truly go towards park improvements.
The city auditor found the parks department's decision to switch to an online permit system before setting up a way to collect fees online cost Honolulu $366,000 in revenue.
The audit also found a $2 administration fee is excessive, given that the department has not determined exactly how it would use that money
