Abercrombie to announce U.S. Senate appointee
Gov. Neil Abercrombie is set to hold a news conference at 2 p.m. to announce the appointment of the person who will take the U.S. Senate seat left by the late Sen. Daniel Inouye.
Sources with knowledge of the situation who asked not to be identified have confirmed with KITV4 News that Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, state Department of Land and Natural Resources Deputy Director Esther Kia'aina, and Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz are the finalists.
The Hawaii Democratic party's central committee voted on its selections Wednesday during a closed-door meeting at the party's headquarters near downtown Honolulu.
Party officials said they don't intend to officially release the selections, leaving that up to the governor.
Seventy-six members in the committee each had three votes. The top three names will be handed to Abercrombie and he is expected to quickly make a decision on the appointee.
