The top Air Force commander in the Pacific says the U.S. sent powerful airplanes to the Korean peninsula in recent weeks in part to show North Korea what the American military is capable of doing.

Gen. Herbert Carlisle said in an interview this week that every morning a potential adversary gets up and says he's not going to "mess with America" is a good morning.

B-2 stealth bombers, F-22 stealth fighters and B-52 bombers recently all flew to South Korea for exercises or short deployments in what amounted to a dramatic display of U.S. air power.

Carlisle hopes missile defense systems the U.S. is sending to Guam will also deter North Korea from launching a missile.
