National retail chain Bed Bath & Beyond opened at Ward Centers on Tuesday.
"It's pretty good. I found what I was looking for. I found a lot of selection," said shopper Yoko Sandhu.
The grand opening is the start of some long-term growth underway in Kaka'ako.
"The entire Kaka'ako area is under entire redevelopment," said Ward Centers Sr. Marketing Manager Katie Ka'anapu. "The Howard Hughes Corporation owns 60 acres in Kaka'ako and it has been approved -- over 4,200 condo units over the next 20-to-25-years."
One of those high-rise condos will be at the current site of the Pier 1 Imports store. Both Pier 1 and Nordstrom Rack will move to a new retail space later in the fall.
"Nordstrom Rack will be increasing its square footage by 10,000 square feet, which is exciting," said Ka'anapu.
The historic IBM building is also under renovation. The building will be the site of the Howard Hughes Corporate Offices.
"The first floor will be open to the public and be the history of the property -- the vision for the future and the six floors will be the model units for the condo towers and the 7th floor will be a penthouse," said Ka'anapu.
Managers of the 30,000-square-foot store are excited about the potential growth in the area and its prime location.
"With all the new homes and constructions and the condo towers, we certainly want to be the destination for needs for everybody's home," said Bed Bath & Beyond Regional Manager Steve Broutt.
