Residents on Kula Kulea Drive have been up all night dealing with boulders that came down in Kalihi Valley damaging some homes.

HONOLULU -

Boulders tumbled down a Kalihi mountainside Thursday night seriously damaging at least two homes.

The alarm came shortly before 9 a.m. on Kula Kolea Place.

According to the Honolulu Fire Department, at least two huge boulders rolled down the mountain hitting three homes with two houses sustaining most of the damage.

No one was injured.  About 50 residents had to be evacuated.

"We have a situation where two to three homes (were) damaged, but several others at risk means that we have to have people make a choice not to stay here -- to stay somewhere else because of the risk," said Capt. Terry Seelig.

Officials aren't sure if there are more loose rocks on the mountain, but the area remains evacuated at least until Friday.

The American Red Cross Hawaii State Chapter opened a shelter late Thursday.

Residents can go to Kalihi Valley District Park at 1911 Kamehameha IV Road.
