A 10-year-old boy is recovering at Kosair Children’s Hospital after a pit bull bit off his nose Wednesday in Henderson, Ky.
According to the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, the dog’s owner told authorities Matthew Weaver was visiting, playing with his friends and the dog when they all started getting rowdy.
The dog owner’s wife calmed the kids and the dog, but when the boy sat on the couch, he began staring the dog in the eyes, the owner said.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the dog lunged at the boy, bit off his nose and swallowed it.
The boy was first taken to a Henderson hospital and police were called.
The Sheriff’s Office and animal control officials went to the dog owner’s house, but were unable to find the boy’s nose.
The dog was taken to a vet’s office, where the doctor discovered the boy’s nose in the dog’s stomach. The nose was removed from the dog’s stomach and taken to the hospital for reattachment.
The boy was later taken to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, where doctors were able to reattach his nose. He was last listed in good condition.
The dog’s owner said he got the dog as a puppy and it never showed any signs of aggression.
The dog was euthanized.
The Henderson County Sheriff said no charges will be filed in the case.
