PEARL CITY, Hawaii -

Honolulu firefighters put out a small brush fire Wednesday that started after a car burst into flames in Pearl City.

Fire officials said it started just after 1 p.m. on Kamehameha Highway near Century Park Plaza.

Two people apparently pulled over and got out of their car when they saw smoke coming from the dashboard.

A fire department spokesman said the car was engulfed in flames by the time crews arrived four minutes later.

No one was hurt, but the flames spread to the nearby brush.

Officials said the fire came within 50 to 100 feet of homes in the Manana Naval Housing area, but a fire break prevented any damage to homes.

Firefighters extinguished the brush fire by 2:30 p.m.

About an acre of brush was burned.
