Firefighters rescued a male hiker from the Waipoo Trail in Kokee on Kauai Monday morning following a search that began on Sunday, according to Kauai officials.
The 68-year-old California man called Police Dispatch for assistance at around 4 p.m. Sunday when he became unsure of his location. He reported that he was walking along the Waipoo Trail when he got lost.
A fire department helicopter headed into the area shortly after 4:30 p.m. to conduct an overhead search, while firefighters from the Waimea station hiked into the nearby Kumuwela Trail.
Heavy cloud cover forced the chopper to retreat Sunday evening. The helicopter dropped two members from the Rescue Team into an area near Waipoo Falls to continue the search on foot. By 8:15 p.m., the lost hiker had not yet been located.
Due to darkness and hazardous conditions the search was called off for the night and resumed at 5:30 a.m. Monday when four firefighters hiked into the area. He was located around 8 a.m.
The chopper airlifted the victim and rescuers to a landing zone along the Waipoo Trail. They then escorted the him back to the trail head.
The hiker was in good health and did not require medical attention.
