HONOLULU -

The Coast Guard is investigating if a kayaker is in distress after an 8-to-10-foot-long red and yellow kayak was found Monday morning.

The Coast Guard Command Center received a report at around 7 a.m. from the vessel Ilikai that they recovered the unmanned kayak adrift with no gear on board about two miles off Makena on Maui.  The kayak has no identification on it.

An Urgent Marine Information Broadcast was issued to alert mariners to the possible kayaker in distress.

The Coast Guard on Maui is working to determine the source of the kayak.

The Maui County Fire Department responded to the shoreline to interview people.

The kayak had no growth on it and the seat is still inside the kayak.

Anyone with information on the kayak's owner or possible point of origination is asked to call the Coast Guard at (808) 842-2600.
