Florida school bus driver caught texting while driving

WESH 2 News has obtained video showing a Seminole County school bus driver texting while driving.

Winter Springs High School is one of three stops on the driver’s route. He also transports elementary and middle school students. This wasn’t the first time he had been caught texting behind the wheel.

“Even just checking your phone and looking down for a second is completely dangerous,” said Anne L’heureux, a Winter Springs High student.

District leaders said parents spotted Robert Stancheski and complained.

Texting while driving is not against Florida law, but district transportation officials said drivers are not allowed to use phones unless it’s an emergency.

“Nowadays, everybody texts, so it’s not surprising,” said Winter Springs student Zachary Barwick. “But it’s (a) surprise that he gets paid to drive and follow the rules.”

Stancheski has driven for three Seminole County schools for almost two years. This is not the first time he has been in trouble for texting. He was previously suspended last April after getting in a fender bender moments after he put his phone down.

No students were on the bus in either situations, but parents and students said a slap on the wrist won’t be enough if this is his second offense.

“None of us want our kids at risk, so if there is someone in our school system not doing what they should, someone should step up and take care of that,” said parent Jeff Hood.

Stancheski is suspended from work without pay. School board leaders will meet next week to determine disciplinary action.
