Brent Keolakani Kanae worked at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company at Ala Moana Center, according to a close family friend.
Kanae was found in a stairwell near the restaurant at about 3 p.m. Wednesday. Police said he had been stabbed several times and was taken to Queen's Medical Center in extremely critical condition, where he later died.
A former co-worker said Kanae was a stand-up guy, who always showed up to work early.
"Rest In Peace" notes that said "RIP Keola" and "RIP Ola" have been left on the walls in a stairwell near the restaurant.
The COO of Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. released a statement on Thursday saying, "We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred. Our thoughts are with the employee's family, friends and coworkers."
Kanae was in the orchestra at Kalani High School his junior year and on the football team his senior year. The quote under his senior photo says "Just do your best and forget the rest."
The Honolulu Medical Examiner said Kanae suffered wounds to his heart and lungs and bled to death.
A close family friend said the family is grieving and trying to figure out what happened. At this point, police are not releasing a motive for the crime.
If anyone has information on the murder they are asked to call 911.
