POLIHALE, Hawaii -

A family of three was hospitalized Monday night following a one-car crash that occurred near Polihale Beach, according to Kauai police.

The incident occurred shortly after 7 p.m., when a 41-year-old Kapaa man and his two children were heading south on a dirt road towards the beach.  The man lost control of his sports-utility vehicle and it flipped into a ditch, leaving the vehicle partially submerged in water.

The father was able to remove his 4-year-old daughter, but his 7-year-old son remained trapped in the car.

A bystander, who was driving near the area at the time, heard cries for help and stopped to assist.  The Good Samaritan was able to cut through a seat belt in order to remove the boy’s unresponsive body from the vehicle and immediately began performing CPR.

The man was able to revive the child before medics and firefighters from the county and the Pacific Missile Range Facility arrived to assist.

All three of the victims were transported to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital. The 7-year-old boy was subsequently flown to a hospital on Oahu, where he remains in critical condition Tuesday morning.

The Kauai Police Department's Traffic Safety Section is investigating the cause of the crash.
