HONOLULU -

The Hawaiian Electric Company wants to warn electric customers about an apparent scam.

A customer reported being approached at home by two people posing as Hawaiian Electric employees.  The impersonators said they needed to enter the customer’s home to inspect the electric outlets.  Once inside, the impersonators stole the customer’s purse and fled.

The impersonators did not show any form of identification.  The customer did not see any vehicles with markings indicating they belonged to Hawaiian Electric or to a contractor working for the company.

The customer notified Hawaiian Electric and reported the incident to the Honolulu Police Department.

Hawaiian Electric urges customers to remember the following:

  • Ask for proper identification if approached by someone who says they are from Hawaiian Electric or any other organization.
  • Hawaiian Electric employees and contractors working for Hawaiian Electric will always present their identification.
  • Hawaiian Electric vehicles are clearly marked. Contractors working for Hawaiian Electric have signs for their vehicles indicating they are working on behalf of the company.
  • Hawaiian Electric will not show up unannounced to do an inspection inside your home.
  • If you feel uncertain and want to confirm that a Hawaiian Electric employee is visiting your home or business, call our Customer Service Center at 548-7311.
  • If you notice any suspicious activity, report it to Honolulu Police and Hawaiian Electric.

In addition, Hawaiian Electric would like to remind customers not to provide personal, confidential or financial information to any unidentified individual and urges customers to be cautious when responding to unsolicited phone calls.
