A standoff between police and a suspect in Nanakuli forced three schools in the area to lock down. Parents and family members waited outside of the schools, while trying to reconnect with their children.

NANAKULI, Hawaii -

Three Nanakuli schools were on lockdown Tuesday afternoon due to a barricade situation in the area, according to the Department of Education.

At 1:15 p.m., Honolulu police responded to a report of a domestic argument at a Haleakala Avenue residence.

The 49-year-old male suspect was accused of physically abusing his 55-year-old girlfriend at their residence, according to police.

The man showed up on Tuesday at the woman's mother's home and police was called.

The man had what appeared to be a weapon and used the woman to shield himself while retreating into the home where he barricaded himself.

Nanakuli Elementary School, Nanaikapono Elementary School and Nanakuli High and Intermediate schools were notified of the situation and locked down.  Haleakala Avenue was also shut down.

The man surrendered and exited the home at 3:15 p.m. without further incident and was in police custody Tuesday evening.  No one was injured.

Police have opened kidnapping and abuse of a household member investigations.
