COLFAX, Wash. -

A hearing for a Maui High School teacher charged with sexual exploitation of a minor is scheduled for August, according to Whitman County officials.

On May 27, police in Portland, Ore. arrested Thomas T. Takeuchi, 60, at an Oregon airport on a warrant.

Takeuchi has taught social studies at Maui High School since 1994, and is also a football referee.

Police said the case began in Pullman, Wash. when a woman reported finding sexual pictures of her 4-year-old daughter on the child's camera.  Authorities said the girl told her mother that Takeuchi took the pictures last October.

On June 7, Takeuchi entered a not guilty plea in a Whitman County courtroom in Washington state.  He was released on his own recognizance.

The Maui Complex Superintendent said an investigation is being conducted.

Takeuchi faces up to 10 years in prison and a $25,000 fine.

A hearing is scheduled for August 10 to see if attorneys declare if they are ready to proceed to trial.  A trial could begin as early as August 20.
