Impact of Kamehameha Highway crash splits car in half
One person has died, and four people injured following a car crash a few miles past the Dole Pineapple Plantation in Wahiawa.
The crash occurred around 3:30 p.m. Police had to shut down Kamehameha Highway at Paalaa Uka Pupukea Road to Joseph P. Leong Highway. The highway reopened at 10:30 p.m.
Honolulu police say the male driver of Volkswagen Bug was traveling northbound on Kamehameha Highway when he crossed the center median into oncoming traffic.
"What our initial investigation came out showing was the Volkswagen Bug was travelling at a high rate of speed," said Lt. Bobby Towne with the Honolulu Police Department.
Towne said the impact of the crash split the Bug in two and part of the car hit a third vehicle.
The driver of the Volkswagen was ejected from the car and died at the scnee. The drivers and passengers of the two other cars were taken to Queens Medical Center in serious condition. Police say the three males and one female, in their 20's and 30's are not facing life threatening injuries. Police do not know if alcohol played a factor in the crash.
