LIHUE, Hawaii -

Kauai officials closed Kalapaki Beach near Lihue Thursday due to a sewage spill.

A sewage spill was reported Wednesday night at the Lihue Wastewater Treatment Plant located on Ninini Point Street above the Kauai Lagoons Golf Course.

The partially treated sewage flowed from off the treatment plant property across Kauai Lagoons and into the storm drain system that leads into Kalapaki Bay.

Officials said between 400,000 and 500,000 gallons of treated effluent spilled into the storm drain.

In an abundance of caution, Public Works officials are asking people to stay out of the water at Kalapaki Bay until further notice.

Wastewater officials anticipate that Kalapaki Beach will remain closed until at least tomorrow afternoon.

County crews are working with the Department of Health and will follow the department’s direction in the management of the sewage spill.

The spill occurred between process units at the plant, due to a partial electrical failure.
