Kihei condo fire causes $1.5 million in damage
Maui County fire crews responded to a fire at the Hale Kamaole Condominiums on South Kihei Road at around 9 p.m. Thursday, according to fire officials.
When firefighters arrived, a third-story unit was engulfed in flames. The unit was unoccupied at the time of the fire.
The fire was fully contained by 2:38 a.m. Friday.
Forty units surrounding the fire were evacuated until 2:45 a.m. Friday.
Eight condo units were not allowed to be reoccupied, according to fire officials. The displaced residents were housed in other units within the complex.
The fire is classified as "undetermined" pending more information. Fire officials say it is unlikely the blaze was intentionally set.
