Kula homes damaged by brush fire

Maui County fire officials said that three Kula homes sustained some fire damage from a brush fire Monday.
The fire scorched six acres, and was still active as of 3:11 p.m. Three helicopters and crews from Kula, Makawao, Kahului and Kihei were on the scene.
Residents on Hapapa Road with house numbers above 156 were evacuated, according to fire officials. No word yet on how many people were evacuated. Maui Civil Defense has been notified.
Fire officials said the brush fire was on Cooke Road, at around 1 p.m. All three single-family homes that were threatened had some fire damage. One home sustained some roof damage.
At 6 p.m. the fire was 60 percent contained. Crews were mopping up hot spots within the burned areas. Crews will remain on scene throughout the night to monitor the situation.
Residents were allowed to return home.
As of 8 a.m. Tuesday, the fire was 90 percent contained with ground crews mopping up and extinguishing hot spots.
