HONOLULU -

Honolulu police say westbound lanes on Ala Moana Boulevard fronting the Equus Hotel were shut down due to a water main break Wednesday afternoon.

The announcement was made just after 12 p.m.  The Equus Hotel is at 1696 Ala Moana Boulevard.

Eight customers were affected by the 4-inch service main break.  Affected customers can get water from the following alternate water sources:

  • Water Wagon fronting Waikiki Marina, 1700 Ala Moana Boulevard
  • Water Wagon fronting Tradewinds Hotel, 1720 Ala Moana Boulevard
  • Spigot placed on a hydrant at 1676 Ala Moana Boulevard

As of 2 p.m., the right westbound lane on Ala Moana Blvd. was closed between Hobron Lane and Atkinson Drive.  However, main repair work will eventually force the closure of two right westbound lanes.  Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes.

As of 6:24 p.m., crews have successfully installed a water bypass to restore water service, at lower-than-normal pressure, to most customers on the makai side of Ala Moana Boulevard.

As of 3:13 a.m. Thursday, all lanes on Ala Moana Boulevard have been reopened.  Work on the 4-inch service main will continue at a later time when crews can get the necessary materials to finish the work.  No customers are without water.

The water main was originally installed in 1949.
