Maui County police have charged a 49-year-old man with second-degree attempted murder after an alleged attack on a 53-year-old homeless woman.
The incident happened on Tuesday at around 2:22 a.m.
The victim was attending a holiday gathering at an apartment complex on Wainee Street in Lahaina. She was with her fiance, the suspect, Calvin Borge of Makawao, Borge's fiance and the apartment owner.
A preliminary investigation revealed that some people, including Borge, were drinking alcoholic beverages before the attack. According to statements, the victim and Borge were talking with each other briefly before the attack.
According to witnesses, Borge approached the victim from the rear, got the victim in a rear neck hold, and used an envelope opener that had a semi-serrated blade and slit the front portion of the victim's neck from left to right across her esophagus.
The victim shrieked and fell to the ground where she was helped by friends at the scene. She was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment and released in satisfactory condition.
The victim said there was no indication that she was about to be assaulted and had barely known Borge.
Bail was set at $100,000.
