Middle school student tattooed during recess

A mother was outraged after her son came home with a tattoo he received during school.

“One of my friends asked me if I wanted a tattoo, and I said, ‘yeah,’” said Washington Middle School student Andre Montoya.

Andre said he and his friends took a sharpened pencil and a pen to his wrist last week during recess and carved “Jamie,” his girlfriend’s name, into his skin.

“It felt almost like getting your ears pierced, but it stung,” Andre said.

His girlfriend also received the ink treatment.

Doctors told Andre on Friday that he would have to live with the name for at least another five years before getting any corrective surgery.

“He doesn’t stick up for himself, so more than likely he was pressured into it,” said Andre’s mother, Andrea.

Officials with Albuquerque Public Schools said they couldn’t prove anyone was pressured into the act, so no one was disciplined.

The school nurse plans to talk to kids about health risks of carving things like this into skin next week.
