Mililani man, 20, dies after crash near airport

HONOLULU -

Honolulu police say a Mililani man is dead after a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Valkenburgh Street and Kamehameha Highway Monday morning.

The medical examiner identified the man as 20-year-old Mark Spofford.

The crsah happened just after 4 a.m.  Investigators say a Chevy sedan was traveling south on Valkenburgh Street through the intersection when it was broadsided by a Jeep traveling west on Kamehameha Highway.

The driver of the Chevy was ejected from the vehicle and landed about 25 feet from the collision.

The driver of the Chevy sedan was taken to Tripler Army Medical Center in extremely critical condition, where he later died.

Honolulu police closed the lanes in the area of the crash while officers investigated the cause of the collision.  The lanes were reopened by 8 a.m.

Traffic investigators say they could not confirm the age of the deceased.

This is the 15th traffic fatality on Oahu this year compared with 16 at this same time last year.
