Molokai man, 33, arrested in shooting death of girlfriend

KAUNAKAKAI, Hawaii -

Maui County police officers on Molokai say a 33-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly shot and killed his 24-year-old girlfriend.

Police say the shooting happened just before 10 p.m. Wednesday at the Kawela Barns Apartments, located at 2626 Kamehameha V Highway, in Kaunakakai.

The woman, identified by police as Malia Kahalewai of Honouliwai, was found with a gunshot wound to her chest.  She was taken to Molokai General Hospital in critical condition where she later died.

Witnesses identified the suspect as Marlin L. Lavoie of Honouliwai.  He left the scene before police got there.

Police located Lavoie's vehicle near his residence  around 7:51 a.m. Thursday and he was arrested without incident.  He was booked on a second-degree murder charge.

Police say Kahalewai and Lavoie have children in common.
