The family of a hit-and-run victim ask for help in finding who killed their mother and daughter.

WAIEHU, Hawaii -

A Maui family is still in shock after learning their loved one was a victim of a fatal pedestrian accident.

Maui police say a driver struck 31-year-old Brandy Mendes as she was walking along the shoulder of Kahekili Highway near Kamaile Street overnight Thursday.

"After the collision, the vehicle fled the scene," said Wayne Ibarra of the Maui Police Department.

Mendes's family says she was walking home from a meeting in Happy Valley when she was killed.  Mendes leaves behind a 7-year-old son and two daughters ages 11 and 15.  The family, who is devastated, wants the person responsible for the crash to turn themselves in to police.

"I don't know if it was an accident or on purpose, either way I would like for you to turn yourself in and admit what you did," said Dawn Mendes, the victim's oldest daughter.

Maui police are looking for a 1997-2002 Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon or Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra truck.  They say it is dark red in color with front end damage.  If you have any information about the crash call Crimestoppers at 242-6966.  This was the 17th fatal pedestrian accident on Maui this year, compared to nine at the same time last year.
