City officials are reporting that three lion cubs were born at the Honolulu Zoo Saturday night to a visiting lion couple.

The lioness, named Moxy, gave birth to the first cub at 7:15 p.m, with the next two following suite at 9 and 10 p.m.

All reports indicate that the birth went smoothly and that the cubs are doing well and are "lively." Zoo staff are closely monitoring Moxy and her newborn cubs.

The 4-year-old lioness and her 5-year-old mate were not a permanent resident of the Honolulu Zoo. According to city officials, the 4-year-old lioness was given as part of a breeding loan program from the Bronx Zoo in New York in November 2010.

The father of the cubs, Ekundu (Swahili for "red") came to Honolulu on July 1, 2010 from the San Diego Wildlife Park. He also came as part of the breeding loan program known as Species Survival Program.

Zoo mammal experts plan on providing the new family with as much assistance as possible while limiting their approach and contact during nursing.

They will not be viewable to the public until cleared by the Zoo Veterinarian.
