New Year's Eve fireworks promises to be biggest in Waikiki ever

It's time for fireworks!  New Year's Eve in Honolulu is always full of lights in the sky.

Listen up for the warning shot five minutes before midnight, so you don't miss the extravaganza.

"Both shows start off with a barrage right at midnight, so that's a number of salutes a big bang right at midnight," said Tommy Likos with Fireworks by Grucci Hawaii.

The preparation started months ago for the 10-to-12-minute-long dazzling light show.

"We have to bring in the product and design the show which starts about a month ahead of time," said Likos.

There's been wiring, loading each shell and making sure everything is ready to go. Just before midnight, someone will tap a key and set the display off, timed perfectly to go off at midnight. This year, organizers promise, will be the biggest the show has ever been in  Waikiki.

The crews will be working with 12-inch shells for the first time in Waikiki. The bigger shells will give viewers a fireworks show that will be bigger and higher in the sky.

Different colors will glisten and different designs will form.

"There are palm trees and flowers its mainly chrysanthemums and pianese," said Likos.

The Waikiki improvement association that's sponsoring a show said the spectacle is a gesture of thanks.

"It's also important as a contribution to the community because it's all of the community that makes Waikiki successful," said Rick Egged with Waikiki Improvement Association.

The show will end with a big golden willow that comes down from the sky and touches the water. An end of a show but an open for a great new year.
